Confusion over timed recordings

"Love the machine. Works well, especially dubbing old VCR recordings to DVD. Only have issues with the timer recording. The manual says you don't have to turn it off once it is set but doesn't say what happens if you do (doesn't work). I have an older model that functions well whether off or on. "
