THX Select2 Plus Certified with New THX Loudness Plus Technology
THX Select2 Plus certification, with THX Loudness Plus, ensures the TX-SR706 is ideally suited for a room where the screen-to-seat viewing distance is approximately 10 to 12 feet, and the room size is approximately 2000 cubic feet. By achieving THX Select2 Plus certification, the TX-SR706 meets the world`s most demanding home theater standards for audio quality and performance, and promises to play at reference volume levels with minimal distortion. Also, a new technology,THX Loudness Plus, improves how you experience movies at lower volume levels. To counteract the loss or distortion of ambient and bass sounds at lower volumes,THX Loudness Plus automatically adjusts the front-to-back speaker levels and frequency balance. This ensures that you can experience all the details of your movies when listening below the reference level.

Processing 1080p Video and High-Def Surround Sound
via HDMI™ With the latest HDMI version and advanced A/V processing capabilities, the TX-SR706 is a powerful control center for all highdefinition media, including Blu-ray Disc and HD broadcasts. You can connect up to four components via HDMI to receive and switch compatible sources and send a 1080p video signal to an HDTV. On the audio side, you have onboard high-definition surround sound codecs—Dolby TrueHD® and DTS-HD™ Master Audio—enabling lossless, studiomaster audio quality from Blu-ray Disc. This version of HDMI also supports Onkyo`s RIHD system control function and provides greater bandwidth to deal with higher resolutions, 36-bit Deep Color™, and high frame rates.

HDMI Video Upscaling (Up to 1080p) with Faroudja
DCDi Cinema (Directional Correlational Deinterlacing) Technology The Faroudja DCDi Cinema video processor takes the TX-SR706 into a higher class when it comes to video processing. Its power lies in its ability to take all video signals, regardless of the input, and upscale them up to 1080p.You simply select the desired resolution via the TX-SR706`s set-up menus to match the resolution of your display. Upscaling takes the video resolution to full HD quality, so it better matches the native resolution of today`s high-definition displays. Faroudja video processors are synonymous with quality, and DCDi Cinema effectively removes video artifacts during the video signal deinterlacing process.

Correcting Room Acoustics and Loudness with Audyssey
MultEQ™ and Audyssey Dynamic EQ™ Audyssey MultEQ is a powerful built-in solution for countering distortion in dedicated home theaters. This technology detects speakers, and then sets levels, delays and crossovers, as well as measuring room acoustics. Using the TX-SR706`s set-up menu, it takes up to six measurements around the listening area and uses high-resolution equalization filters for satellites and the subwoofer. MultEQ covers both the frequency response and the time domain (where most of the problems lie) across the entire listening area. The results are immediately obvious—a clear, well-balanced and natural sound. After calibration, Audyssey Dynamic EQ solves the problem of deteriorating sound quality at lower volumes. Dynamic EQ selects the best possible frequency response and surround levels moment-by-moment, resulting in an ideal listening experience at any volume level.

Push-Pull Amplification Design with Three-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry
The TX-SR706`s push-pull amplification design uses different transistors on each channel to separately amplify the positive and negative halves of the waveform. Meanwhile, three-stage inverted Darlington circuitry helps reduce distortion at the output stage. The whole design works to realize a highly efficient drive capability. RIHD (Remote Interactive over HDMI) for System Control. The TX-SR706 offers integrated system control with selected HDMI-compatible high-definition displays, DVD and hard disk recorders, and Blu-ray Disc players. With one remote control, you can control several functions, including Standby,Volume Command, and Direct
Change. RIHD lets you seamlessly integrate the TX-SR706 with other leading brand-name devices, including those with Panasonic VIERA Link and Toshiba CE-Link capability, and selected Sharp displays.
*Compatibility depends on respective model.
*Panasonic VIERA Link is the new name for EZ Sync.

Two High-Quality Texas Instruments Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Chips
The TX-SR706 assigns two Texas Instruments (Aureus™) DSP chips to handle the greater processing requirements of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, Audyssey MultEQ, and post-processing.

Cirrus Logic Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs) for Highly Precise Audio
You will find top-quality Cirrus Logic DACs included in the TX-SR706 to push analog audio performance to even greater levels. These DACs offer 24-bit conversion and support sampling rates of up to 192 kHz, while
displaying high resistance to clock jitter and offering a 120 dB dynamic range.

Music Optimizer to Support Compressed Digital Music Files
While MP3 or AAC files may sound fine on a portable digital player, the limitations of these compressed files can be exposed when played back through a home entertainment system. Onkyo has designed onboard Music Optimizer technology to improve the quality of compressed audio signals. Compressed music loses a substantial amount of bit information at higher frequencies, so the Music Optimizer technology works to overcome this limitation and enhance audio quality.

XM Satellite Radio and SIRIUS Satellite Radio Programming
By using the ports on the TX-SR706's rear, it's possible to access both XM and Sirius Satellite Radio. XM Satellite Radio offers 170 digital channels of radio programming, including 69 commercial-free music channels; over 30 channels of news, sports, talk and entertainment; and over 20 dedicated channels of XM Instant Traffic and Weather. SIRIUS brings access to over 130 digital-quality channels, including 69 channels of 100% commercial-free music, plus exclusive channels of sports, news, talk, entertainment, traffic, weather, and data.

Perfect Receiver at this price point

"My Denon 2308 recently died. Its under warranty but getting that repaired easily is another story. I bought the Onkyo to get me through the 4+ weeks I wouldnt have an engine to drive my HDTV & BluRay Movies. The best part about that is being able to compare the Onkyo with the Denon. The Onkyo is the clear winner. Here is where its better: + Easy Setup + Much better interface + More user friendly + Unit has mo..." Read Full Review »

Also having problems with audyssey...

"This is the second Onkyo 7 series receiver I have owned. I liked the 705 so much that when my neighbor wanted to buy it, I upgraded to the 706. However, here is where the honeymoon ended. After setting up my 7.1 system, I went to complete the audyssey auto seaker setup. The mic is not picking up the test tones. After trying everything I could think of, including calling OneCall, I tried the mic that worked ..." Read Full Review »

"I use this as a pre amp in a medium sized dedicated home theater room which has been very well acoustically treated (this ROOM sounds great). I use separate amps for my power hungry Magnepans. "I just wanted a decent mid-range receiver that does all the latest lossless audio formats and has 7.1 channels so it's ready to take advantage of BluRay as that format evolves. So my primary focus is on a system that plays audio for movies and video games as it's primary function. Currently I have t …"  Read Full Review »
