GPS-based Speed Camera and Red Light Alert System

The NavAlert Speed Camera Alert System is a feature-packed device that uses SIRF GPS technology to warn you of up-coming speed and red light cameras. It alerts to every type of red light and and speed camera in the USA and Canada. The NavAlert speed camera detector can store around 150,000 positions in its database. The speed camera locations can be divided into different data sets to distinguish between such positions as fixed speed cameras, possible mobile camera positions, red light cameras, schools, and high collision areas.

The tiny NavAlert unit has an LED display on the front of the unit, which provides additional information to supplement the voice announcements. While driving normally, it will display the current speed. When a warning is triggered, a chime is heard followed by an announcement such as "camera ahead limit 60". The speed limit at the camera site will flash before going back to displaying the vehicle's speed. This will typically happen at 500 meters from the camera position. A second chime is heard at 200 yards from the camera site, and if the vehicle is still over the speed limit, a continuous warning is heard, "reduce speed," and a warning sound until the vehicle speed drops to the speed limit or the camera site is passed, at which time an all clear chime is heard.

Features

The NavAlert detects Gatso, Truvelo, SPECS, Speedmaster, DS2, traffic light cameras, high traffic collision areas, and all other permanent safety cameras. The detector will give an over-speed warning in close proximity to the camera if exceeding the speed limit, but will automatically mute when within the speed limit. The driver is only advised of cameras on the road they are driving along, thereby negating false alerts. The driver is advised as he or she approaches high collision areas. This system has a GPS speedometer and announces close proximity to schools, such as Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (School zones can be switched off.) This unit displays the current location as latitude and longitude, which can be relayed to the emergency services or breakdown authorities. You can also import GPS data via USB to supply your laptop or cellphone with GPS NMEA data.

Installation

The NavAlert is easy to install. In the box there is a small rubberized magnet, with a peel off sticky base. The user simply has to remove the sticker cover, and position the magnet on the top of their dashboard. Insert the power jack into the cigarette lighter, and plug the other end of the lead into the NavAlert unit, then place on top of the magnet. It's now ready to use.

Updates

The NavAlert is very easy to update via our website. The user simply logs onto the website, and plugs the unit into the PC via the USB cable (supplied). The user clicks the update database button on the front page of the website and follows a few simple instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the unit cover my area?

Yes, the Navalert covers your area. Our database has all red light cameras and speed cameras saved in its database for North America.

Can the unit be updated if new cameras are added to my area?

Yes. This is not a problem because we monitor all government releases and the news media, often alerting you to cameras that are still weeks away from even being activated.

Why would I buy this device when I could just buy a license plate cover?

The object is not to run red lights or speed. The object is to be warned of the camera, which is what our device does legally. In some areas, plate covers carry high fines and sprays are not as effective anymore on today's cameras.

How does the Speed Trap function work?

We use a national database of speed camera locations. These are locations the police use to set up radar and laser speed traps. This function is highly effective of saving you a ticket when traveling on roads or highways using radar or laser speed detection.

Radar Roy's Tests

Radar Roy's top pick for combating the automated fixed photo radar and red light cameras!

"We tested the unit at all six speed camera locations on the 101, and the NavAlert performed flawlessly."

"Because of the stellar performance of the NavAlert, I have awarded it Radar Roy’s covetted Five Star rating.”

Good Idea, Poorly Implemented

"Updates come sporadically--a week here, two weeks there and currently more than a month. This leaves out many new cameras in my area so I am still hunting for the warning signs like before I purchased this. Updates also require a cumbersome registration process that then forgets your registration info imediately. Additionally, there is no clear way to send them info on new cameras in your area. So good concep..." Read Full Review »

"I like the concept but their updates are slow and generally out of date. I still have to look out for speed and red light cameras on my own. The updates are infrequent and not that accurate. This was ok because it used to be free now they charge for their poor inaccurate updates. "
